Have you heard of a thing called Birchbox? I’m guessing that you probably have. But for those of you who haven’t yet jumped onto the subscription box bandwagon, you need to check this out!
WHAT IS BIRCHBOX?
In short, Birchbox is a company that sends you monthly boxes full of 5 different sample size beauty products. And it’s pretty awesome. I’ve been subscribed for a few years now, and since then I’ve seen a ton of other companies start up subscriptions of their own. There are a lot to choose from these days, but in my opinion, Birchbox is the best value out there. No, I’m not getting compensated for saying this. I just really enjoy it and wanted to tell you guys about it
HOW DOES IT WORK?
My Birchbox costs $10/month, and that seems to be the rock bottom price for beauty subscription boxes nowadays. Even though there are many others out there, the value has me hooked.
When you sign up, they ask you to fill out a profile. They ask questions about your hair & skin type, your coloring, your lifestyle and what “problem areas” you want to focus on. That’s about it! It may take about 2 months for the first kit to arrive, but once it does, you’ll receive your box consistently every single month.
I must say It gives me a little kick going to the mailbox and pulling out something other than a bill or junk mail. So much so, I thought I should start sharing with you the little goodies I open every month in case you’re curious about what exactly it offers. Mind you, the products that they send me won’t necessarily be the same ones you’d receive. They’ll be totally customized for you. As for mine, I ask for skincare for oily skin, hair products for frizzy hair, and preferably natural ingredients whenever possible, but not a hard and fast rule.
So, let’s get started, shall we?!
MY SEPTEMBER BIRCHBOX
Radiance Face Mask by Balance Me
This is a clay based mask that cleanses, exfoliates and brightens. It has a nice lotion like texture, feeling quite emollient, and scattered, tiny beads meant for exfoliation. I have to admit, I’m not sure about masks. They’re fun to occasionally use, but I don’t see any lasting effect with them. I’ve still yet to buy one, but if you, like many, are loving masks, this one seems like a great multitasker.
Protect & Blond Toning Shampoo by Beauty Protector
Clearly they picked this one for me since my profile shows that I have colored/blonde highlighted hair. I haven’t yet tried this, but I’m intrigued. Check out the color!
This color purple is supposed to take down the brassiness that happens to blonde hair over time due to sun, chlorine, or in my case, a bad color job! I intend to use this when I get closer to needing a touch up.
Detoxifying Bespoke Cleansing Set by Erno Laslo
Wow, this stuff is really unique. Even though I have oily skin, I have tried oil cleansers before and am surprised by how much I like them. This one takes two steps: Wash your face with the oil first, then follow with the soap. But check out the crazy color of these! Yes, both products are grey! But despite the strange color, the smell was quite refreshing & clean. I’m not sure if I want to take two steps for end of the day cleansing, but I have to admit my skin felt clean and really, really fresh afterward,
Ubame Mascara by Milk Makeup
I’ve just recently started to wear mascara again, and I don’t quite remember why I stopped. There are SO many to choose from out there, so to shake things up a bit, they came up with this unusual wand.
I think there may be a bit of a learning curve on this, but I love how easy this shape makes it to get those inner and outer lashes. This design also makes doing bottom lashes more “specifically” so there’s less chance that you’ll overdo it.
Pretty Rotten Eau de Parfum byTokyoMilk Dark
I’m not familiar with this brand, but what an unusual name for a perfume! I thought maybe Birchbox was doing a Halloween themed box with this one. It’s described as “mossy with layers of ambrosia apple, Queen amber rose with green, leafy notes”. As you know, scent is a very personal taste. I can’t say if this is good or bad for that very reason. This to me has a more masculine scent, which seems to go well with the season.
Overall I think it’s a pretty good box. My definition for pretty good is if I’ll use most if not all of the products. It’s an “excellent” box if I love it enough to buy one or several of the products. I myself stick mostly to drugstore beauty products for both budget and quality reasons, but sometimes they send me something I just can’t live without. “Holy grail” as they call it. So check out Birchbox if you’re so inclined, and maybe you’ll find a few holy grails as well!
